Punjab Extends Section 144 for Seven More Days Amid Terror Threats

Public Gatherings and Protests Remain Banned

The Punjab Home Department has announced the extension of Section 144 across the province for another seven days, now effective until November 8, in a bid to maintain law and order amid security concerns. The renewed order prohibits all protests, rallies, sit-ins, and public processions, as the government seeks to prevent potential terrorist threats and unrest.

Under the extended directives, public gatherings of four or more individuals are completely banned, while displaying weapons and using loudspeakers—except for Azan (call to prayer) and Friday sermons (Khutbah)—remain strictly restricted. Additionally, the publication or distribution of hateful, sectarian, or inciting materials has been outlawed.

Government Cites Security Risks

According to officials, the decision aims to safeguard lives and property as intelligence agencies have warned of possible terrorist attacks targeting public assemblies. Authorities emphasized that extremist groups may attempt to exploit protests and large gatherings to push anti-state agendas.

Exemptions, however, apply to weddings, funerals, court proceedings, and official government duties, ensuring that essential public functions continue without disruption.

Background: TLP Protests and Security Crackdown

Section 144 was first enforced on October 9, following widespread protests organized by the now-banned Tehreek-e-Labbaik Pakistan (TLP). After violent demonstrations in Lahore and an overnight security operation in Muridke on October 13, the Punjab government sought a federal ban on TLP under Section 11B of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997.

The federal government subsequently declared the group a proscribed organization, stating there were “reasonable grounds to believe that TLP is involved in terrorism.”

Focus on Stability and Public Safety

Officials have reiterated that the extension of Section 144 is a temporary but crucial step to preserve peace and prevent extremist violence across Punjab. The government continues to monitor the situation closely and may review the restrictions depending on the security landscape in the coming days.
