Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Orders Swift Action Against Timber Mafia
In a decisive move to tackle illegal deforestation and reduce smog, the Punjab Forest Department has launched an intensified crackdown on the timber mafia under the direct instructions of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The campaign aims to preserve natural forests, improve air quality, and support the province’s ongoing Smog Control Program.
During a late-night operation between October 23 and 24 in Halwar, Murree, officials from the Murree Forest Division successfully intercepted a vehicle carrying a large consignment of illegal timber. The team confiscated the vehicle, though the suspects fled the scene. Legal proceedings have been initiated at the Forest Range Office to ensure strict action against those involved.
Illegal Deforestation: A Hidden Cause of Punjab’s Smog Crisis
Authorities have identified illegal logging and deforestation as major contributors to air pollution and smog across Punjab. Trees act as natural air filters, absorbing pollutants and reducing carbon emissions — their loss has worsened the region’s environmental conditions.
As part of the Smog Control Program, the Punjab government has adopted a zero-tolerance policy toward all forms of timber smuggling and forest encroachment. The crackdown reflects the province’s growing commitment to environmental protection and sustainable forestry.
Green Punjab Mission Gains Momentum
Aligned with Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s Green Punjab Mission, large-scale tree plantation drives and forest restoration projects are being fast-tracked across the province. These initiatives aim to restore ecological balance, promote biodiversity, and reduce the health risks posed by rising pollution levels.
Senior Provincial Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb reaffirmed that the government is implementing a coordinated strategy to protect natural resources. “Our efforts are focused on eliminating smog, curbing deforestation, and ensuring cleaner air for future generations,” she said.
Sustainable Future Through Enforcement and Awareness
The Punjab government’s intensified actions mark a significant step toward achieving climate resilience and environmental sustainability. Experts believe that consistent enforcement, combined with public participation in tree plantation campaigns, could lead to lasting improvements in air quality and forest conservation.
