Restricted Meetings Raise Alarms
The limited jail access granted to former prime minister Imran Khan has triggered fresh political controversy across Pakistan. For nearly a month, Khan’s family claimed they were denied permission to meet him at Adiala Jail, raising concerns about his health and treatment. The issue escalated into protests by his family and supporters, forcing authorities to finally allow his sister, Uzma Khanum, to visit him earlier this week.
After the meeting, Uzma Khanum said her brother appeared physically stable but described his detention conditions as harsh, calling it “mental torture” due to prolonged isolation and lack of contact.
Why Is Imran Khan Behind Bars?
Imran Khan, who served as prime minister from 2018 to 2022, has been imprisoned since August 2023 following multiple convictions. These include the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case, the Toshakhana case related to state gifts, and convictions under the Official Secrets Act in the cypher case. He also faces anti-terrorism charges linked to violent protests by his supporters in 2023. Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have consistently denied all allegations.
Family Claims Isolation and Mental Pressure
Speaking to media, Uzma Khanum said Khan is confined to his cell most of the day, allowed outside only briefly, and denied regular interaction with others. She stated that even their 30-minute meeting was closely monitored. According to her, Khan believes the restrictions are deliberate and meant to break him psychologically rather than physically.
Court Orders vs Ground Reality
The controversy deepened after claims that jail authorities ignored Islamabad High Court orders allowing Khan to meet designated visitors twice a week. Despite these directives, family members insist visits were blocked, fuelling rumours about Khan’s health and location.
Protests and Government Response
Khan’s sisters and PTI leaders staged repeated protests outside Adiala Jail, some of which reportedly led to detentions. PTI supporters also demonstrated in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other areas. In response, authorities imposed Section 144 in Islamabad and Rawalpindi to curb gatherings. The government has denied any wrongdoing. A PML-N lawmaker told parliament that Khan’s health was “perfectly fine” and dismissed rumours as foreign propaganda.
Why This Issue Has Political Impact
Analysts told Humdard News that restricting Khan’s jail access could backfire politically. Critics argue it violates court orders and prisoner rights, reinforcing perceptions of political victimisation. With PTI still commanding strong public support despite election restrictions, observers warn that such measures may deepen political instability rather than contain it.
