Veteran Politician Dies After Prolonged Illness

Former chief minister of Punjab, Mian Manzoor Ahmed Wattoo, passed away in Lahore on Tuesday at the age of 86. His secretary, Muhammad Asif, confirmed the sad news to Humdard News, stating that the seasoned politician had been unwell for a long time. He is survived by three sons and four daughters.

Wattoo’s grandson, columnist Hassan Kamal Wattoo, also announced the passing on social media, sharing that funeral prayers will be offered at Wasawewala Stadium, Okara, at 2pm.

President and PM Pay Tribute

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed deep sorrow over Wattoo’s demise, praising his invaluable public service, role in strengthening democracy, and contribution to national unity. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif also condoled the death, saying that Wattoo’s services to Pakistan’s politics would always be remembered.

A Political Journey Spanning Decades

Born on August 14, 1939, in Deepalpur, Okara, Manzoor Wattoo remained active in politics for decades. He began his career as chairman of the Okara district council in 1983 and entered the Punjab Assembly in 1985, later becoming its speaker.

Over the years, Wattoo remained associated with multiple political parties, including PML, PML-Junejo, PML-Jinnah, PML-Q, PPP, and briefly PTI. He was known for his strong political maneuvering and ability to stay relevant in changing political landscapes.

Chief Minister and Beyond

Wattoo became Punjab’s chief minister in 1993 during a turbulent political phase. His rise followed the dismissal of the Nawaz Sharif government and a major split within the PML. With backing from the PPP, he assumed the top provincial office, reshaping Punjab’s political dynamics at the time.

Later, he served as federal minister for Kashmir affairs during the PPP-led coalition government from 2008 to 2013. He was also appointed PPP’s central Punjab president in 2012, a move that surprised many party workers.

Remembering a Political Strategist

Manzoor Wattoo was widely regarded as a master political strategist who navigated Pakistan’s complex politics with resilience. His death marks the end of an era in Punjab politics, leaving behind a legacy that will be debated and remembered for years to come.
