Islamabad (Humdard News): The opposition alliance Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Ayeen-e-Pakistan (TTAP) staged a major protest outside Parliament House on Friday, intensifying its nationwide campaign against the recently approved 27th Constitutional Amendment.
Amendment Sparks Outrage Among Political and Legal Circles
The 27th Amendment, passed by Parliament on 13 November, has triggered strong backlash across the political and legal spectrum. The legislation introduces wide-ranging structural changes in both the judiciary and the military, prompting critics—including former and sitting judges—to describe it as a direct attack on judicial independence.
Opposition parties argue that the amendment undermines the foundational balance of power laid out in the Constitution, calling it a step toward centralised authority and weakened oversight.
Opposition Alliance Vows to Restore Original Constitutional Structure
During a high-level meeting on Friday, TTAP leaders reaffirmed their commitment to a full-scale protest movement aimed at restoring the Constitution to its original form. Under this strategy, allied parties assembled outside Parliament House, carrying banners with slogans such as:
- “Down with dictatorship”
- “Long live democracy”
- “27th Amendment rejected”
- “Subjugation of judiciary means subjugation of the people”
The demonstration drew senior opposition figures including TTAP Chairman Mehmood Khan Achakzai, TTAP Vice Chairman Senator Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja, and former National Assembly Speaker Asad Qaiser.
Protests Gaining Momentum Across Provinces
The movement is rapidly spreading across provincial capitals. Yesterday, PTI lawmakers in Punjab marched from the Punjab Assembly to Charing Cross, denouncing the amendment and calling for its reversal.
Last week, TTAP announced plans to present a formal resolution against the 27th Amendment in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly, signalling a coordinated national push to challenge the legislation through both political mobilization and parliamentary pressure.
A Growing Showdown Over Constitutional Authority
As TTAP intensifies its protests, the controversy surrounding the 27th Amendment continues to deepen. With opposition parties uniting under a single banner, the coming weeks may see a broader political confrontation over constitutional interpretation, judicial independence, and the balance of democratic power in Pakistan.
