In a decisive move to protect the integrity of national sports, the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) has imposed strict bans on several athletes and officials linked to the Pakistan Weightlifting Federation.
The action follows confirmed anti-doping violations identified by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) and the International Testing Agency (ITA) under Operation JASMINE.
Athletes and Officials Barred from Sports Activities
According to the official notification, Sharjeel Butt, Abdul Rehman, Ghulam Mustafa, Farhan Majeed, former PWF President Hafiz Imran Butt, coach Irfan Butt, and coach Waqas Akbar have been banned.
The athletes and coaches will remain suspended for the full term of their international ineligibility, while officials are barred from all sports-related roles and facilities for four years with immediate effect. During this period, they cannot hold office, participate in competitions, or access PSB resources.
Background of the Doping Case
The controversy dates back to 2021, when multiple Pakistani weightlifters reportedly evaded doping tests and later returned positive samples. In early 2025, the Court of Arbitration for Sport Anti-Doping Division confirmed several suspensions.
The ITA report further revealed violations under various provisions of the International Weightlifting Federation’s Anti-Doping Rules, including possession, administration of prohibited substances, and complicity. Since more than three athletes committed Anti-Doping Rule Violations (ADRVs) within a 12-month period, additional disciplinary action was triggered under IWF regulations.
Pakistan Reaffirms Zero-Tolerance Policy
The PSB emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to clean sport and fair competition as a signatory to the International Convention against Doping in Sport. Copies of the notification have been shared with global bodies including the International Olympic Committee, Olympic Council of Asia, and other relevant organizations.
This landmark decision signals a strict zero-tolerance approach toward doping in Pakistan weightlifting and reinforces efforts to restore credibility in the country’s sporting system.
